Nutrition
The food your child eats shapes their growth, energy, and overall well-being. A healthy, balanced diet fuels the body with the nutrients it needs to thrive—whether your child is a baby, a busy teenager, or anywhere in between. At Great Destinations Pediatrics, our team partners with families to make nutrition practical, fun, and sustainable.
Building Healthy Habits Early
As a parent, teaching your child to eat nutritious foods sets the foundation for lifelong health. We work with kids and teens to give them the knowledge and tools to make healthy choices for themselves. Our goal is not only to prevent illness but also to promote wellness at every stage of development.
Preventing Chronic Conditions
Children, just like adults, can be at risk for conditions such as obesity, high cholesterol, and prediabetes. A healthy diet lowers those risks. At wellness visits, we can:
- Monitor cholesterol, triglycerides, and blood sugar
- Identify early warning signs of nutritional imbalance
- Recommend practical dietary and lifestyle changes
- Suggest supplements when necessary to fill nutrient gaps
Nutrition Through the Stages of Growth
Every child’s calorie needs vary based on their age and activity level, but the foundation of a healthy diet stays the same:
- Fruits & vegetables
- Whole grains & legumes
- Lean proteins such as fish, chicken, turkey, and eggs
- Nuts, seeds, and dairy
Foods high in saturated and trans fats—like fried foods, fast food, and fatty meats—should be limited.
For infants, exclusive breastmilk and/or infant formula is recommended until about 6 months of age. Once your baby is ready to sit independently, we’ll guide you on introducing solid foods safely.
Identifying and Addressing Deficiencies
Even with a balanced diet, nutritional deficiencies can still occur. Common childhood deficiencies include low calcium, vitamin D, and iron. During wellness checks, we review eating habits and, when needed, conduct screenings. If a deficiency is found, we’ll recommend food-based solutions or supplements to restore balance.
A Lifetime of Wellness
Good nutrition is more than eating the right foods—it’s about creating habits that last a lifetime. We’re here to support you and your child with personalized guidance at every step.
