Anxiety & Depression

Anxiety and depression aren’t just adult issues—children and teens can struggle with them too. At Great Destinations Pediatrics, our compassionate team provides thoughtful, integrative care to support the whole child: mind, body, spirit, family, and community. We’re here to help your child find relief, build resilience, and feel like themselves again.

Understanding Anxiety in Children

It’s natural for kids to feel nervous sometimes, but ongoing worry or fear that interferes with daily life may signal an anxiety disorder.
Signs include:
  • Fear of being separated from parents
  • Intense phobias or avoidance of certain situations
  • Fear of public spaces like school or stores
  • Constant worry about the future or bad things happening
  • Panic attacks (sudden fear with racing heartbeat, shakiness, or shortness of breath)
  • Difficulty sleeping or frequent physical complaints (headaches, stomachaches, fatigue)

While mild fears are common in very young children, anxiety that persists into grade school or adolescence should be evaluated.

Recognizing Depression in Children and Teens

Sadness is a normal part of life, but depression is more than a temporary mood. It can disrupt a child’s ability to enjoy life and connect with family and friends.
Warning signs include:
  • Persistent sadness, irritability, or hopelessness
  • Loss of interest in activities they once enjoyed
  • Sleeping too much or too little
  • Eating more or less than usual
  • Low energy or increased agitation
  • Feelings of guilt, worthlessness, or low self-esteem
If your child shows signs of self-harm or expresses suicidal thoughts, seek emergency help right away by calling 911 or go to the nearest children’s emergency room such as Phoenix Children’s Hospital or Banner Thunderbird Medical Center Pediatric ER.

Our Integrative Approach to Care

At Great Destinations Pediatrics, we focus on the whole child—not just the symptoms. Our providers consider how physical health, nutrition, sleep, family dynamics, and social life all impact mental well-being.
Treatment may include:
  • Counseling support and referrals
  • Nutrition and lifestyle recommendations
  • Stress management strategies
  • Supplements or medications when appropriate
  • Ongoing follow-up and family-centered care
Our goal is to help children feel safe, supported, and understood while giving families practical tools to promote healing.
