Circumcision
Circumcision is a common newborn procedure that removes the foreskin from the penis. While it is not medically required, some families choose circumcision for cultural, religious, or personal reasons. It can also provide certain health benefits, including a reduced risk of urinary tract infections in infancy, lower rates of some sexually transmitted infections later in life, and decreased risk of penile cancer in adulthood.
At Great Destinations Pediatrics, our experienced pediatric team provides routine circumcisions for healthy newborn boys in a safe, comfortable setting.
What to Expect During the Procedure
- Circumcision is usually performed within the first few weeks of life when babies are healthy and feeding well.
- The procedure takes about 10–15 minutes.
- To keep your baby comfortable, we use a local anesthetic (lidocaine), soothing music, and a sugar pacifier for added pain relief.
- Babies can be fed soon after the procedure—but please do not feed your baby for two hours before the appointment.
After circumcision, the penis is covered with gauze and petroleum jelly to protect the area while it heals. Your baby will be observed in our office for about 30 minutes before going home.
Caring for Your Baby at Home
Proper aftercare helps ensure a smooth recovery. We recommend:
Change diapers frequently to reduce irritation and prevent infection.
Use only warm water and mild soap for cleaning (avoid scented bath products for several days).
Replace the dressing with each diaper change.
You can expect your son to experience mild tenderness for a few days, with complete healing in 7–10 days.
It’s normal for the tip of the penis to appear slightly raw or yellow as it heals. A small amount of blood on the dressing may occur initially.
