The 411 on Outdoor Projects

There’s no denying that Dallasites love a good outdoor living area. From low-key back porches with a fire pit and some chairs to full-fledged kitchens and living spaces, the demand for remodels and additions to outdoor areas are at an all time high. Looking for a little inspiration for an outdoor project of your own? These are a few of our favorite outdoor living spaces:

  • A space to gatherThis covered back porch features a Restoration Hardware fire table and some chairs and side tables, perfect for entertaining friends and family or taking a moment to yourself, maybe with a book and a glass of wine. Craving something custom? Fire tables can be custom built with a variety of burners and finishes to create a piece that’s unique to your home.
  • A space to entertain. An outdoor kitchen is ideal for those of us who like to cook (or cater) for groups. This one (pictured below) features a grill, sink, warming drawer, beverage fridge, and plenty of seating. The open concept helps to maintain a sense of flow and invites guests to enjoy the entire backyard. A popular add-on to outdoor kitchens are motorized, retractable screens that can keep bugs out (I’m lookin’ at you, mosquitos!) without interrupting the view.

  • A space to have guests. A separate guest house or pool cabana is ideal for those of us who like the idea of an outdoor kitchen or living area… but also love air conditioning. A separate, enclosed space also allows you the freedom to put anything you want inside. A wet bar? Steam shower? Spray tan booth? Yoga studio? The world is your oyster! Larger spaces like guest houses and outdoor kitchens/living rooms require a bit more design work, so seek out the help of a design-build firm or an architect to ensure your dreams successfully come into fruition.
  • A place to play. Maybe the idea of an entire kitchen in your backyard feels a bit… extreme… for your tastes, but you still want a little space to call your own. A customized basketball court or putting green is a great way to enjoy the outdoors, have some fun, and improve your skills – without overtaking your whole yard.

Whatever your preference with outdoor spaces, the fall and winter is a great time to get started on outdoor projects. That way, by the time spring rolls around (or at least that random warm day in late February), your project is completed and you’re ready to enjoy your new cabana! Or kitchen. Or fire pit. Or sport court.
