The project: the homeowners wanted to remodel their dated master bath and transform it into a relaxing, transitional-style haven.
The must-haves: a walk-in shower and freestanding tub, plenty of storage space at the vanity for product, an enclosed water closet, and heated floors (no one likes cold toes in the winter, not even in Texas!). In the adjacent master bedroom, the clients desired a new nook for a built-in desk.
The before: the original space was a large square (~10’x10′) with his and hers closets, separate vanities, a small enclosed shower, and a tub. All of the features listed above sat at the perimeter of the room, making for a large rectangle of unused space in the center of the suite. The separate closets also took up valuable room without adding a proportional amount of storage space.
The challenges: the old space was 189 square feet, which meant the homeowners’ desire for a tub, shower, enlarged closet, and separate water closet called for some creative planning. Many space-conserving options were considered, including a wet room and Japanese-style soaking tub, before the final design was approved.
The solutions: in the end, the suite was split up into a 100 square foot bathroom and 89 square foot closet. Some square footage was taken from the master closet to fit in a water closet while still allowing space for a new desk nook in the master bedroom. A 42″ tall wall at the shower helped to add some privacy and create a more intentional space for the tub. Instead of separate his and hers vanities, we opted for a larger single vanity cabinet. To add extra storage to the shared vanity, recessed mirrored medicine cabinets were installed over both sinks.
